Yoga Fitness For All Ages

Yoga fitness is obtained from using a system of breathing exercises and postures in a self-controlled manner. Yoga is a fantastic way to keep fit for people of all ages.

The word yoga was derived from an Indo-European word meaning "to join" and it literally mean "union". The main goal of a yoga fitness program is to create a balanced relationship between your physical and mental health. It creates an awareness of yourself and your day to day life. This is a radical change for many people who often live on autopilot. Although its basic purpose is to bring together mind and body, the required postures and breathing exercises provide a strenuous activity for physical exercise.

There are many forms of yoga and with a little research, you can determine the yoga fitness program that works best for you. Learning can be instructor-led classes, on-line classes or self taught. Home instruction is available through a wide variety of books and DVDs. Many people develop a love for the benefits and teachings of yoga and go on to build careers in this field. Yoga Career

I have provided a brief description of four types to help give you some idea of the different practices and their requirements. It is best to start out at the lowest level possible and work your way up as you develop strength and understanding. Just like most other things, it is important to know the foundational concepts before branching out into more difficult yoga fitness programs.

Hatha

If yoga is something you have never tried before, then Hatha is a perfect starting point for you. The main focus is breathing, meditation, and posture with a strong emphasis on the mental component of meditation.

Karma

Karma yoga is the process of combining the spiritual and physical worlds, the fundamentals of which are based in the Hindu philosophy and religion. Your Karma growth is dependant on how you live your life. Good Karma results from living your life for happiness and love. Bad Karma results from living your life for the purpose of money, wealth, and material possessions. Using this form of yoga will help you focus on your life goals and guide you in the right direction.

Birkram

Birkram yoga is practiced in a space that has been heated to over 115 degrees and is also known as “hot yoga” for that reason. The hot environment is believed to aid in the body's flexibility by warming the muscles and tendons. Although it mainly focuses on stretches and balance, many of the 26 poses are used to create pressure in the body. This constant build up of pressure generates a rush of blood flowing through the veins upon release and is believed to clean out the veins. If you decide on this program, be prepared to sweat, wear light clothing, and drink plenty of fluids before each session.

Tai Chi

If your out of shape, then Tai Chi may be something you would like to try. It is a very gentle form of exercise that anyone can do from any position, even sitting. Tai Chi involves a series of movements and stretches that will improve posture, stamina, and flexibility. These movements are slow and deliberate and they help to improve circulation, reduce headache tension, lower blood pressure, eliminate chronic back and neck pain. Attending a class is the recommended way to learn Tai Chi.
